The Yellow Brick Road - Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

So, recently I took some time off of work (if you call this
work) and had some time to spend at my summer vacation place…

It needed a lot of work - new mulch, grass seed, log splitting
and stuff like that…

So off my family went for a little R and R knowing that a little
work was going to be involved…

Now it’s easy for me to sit and reflect on the week…

Umm., my nephew caught two 19.5 inch catfish - WOW
he was so excited….

I caught a good handful of bluegill ( love to fish, love to eat
the fish ) Yummie…then I

Helped a neighbor rebuild their driveway…

Helped a neighbor put up some blinds…

Helped a neighbor fill some holes with dirt…

Helped a neighbor move firewood…

Helped a neighbor with a lawn mower…

Helped a neighbor build a flower box…

Do you start to see a pattern….

“To get more, we have to become more for other people…”

So after working so hard and going out for dinner with friends…

We decided to sit around the campfire and enjoy a good conversation
with a good bottle of wine….

It was after 10 p.m. - the tornado watch was over at 8 p.m.

The wind starts to pick up, the trees start swaying….

CRACK - a branch breaks - the FIRE gets sucked up into the
air and put out….

then I hear the sound…..some call it a train, others call
it a helicoptor…..high and low pressure causing a “chop chop”
sound….

I grab our elderly friends and run them to the nearest ditch….

the chairs we were sitting in flew up in the air..

Pop goes the sound of another full size tree breaking in half….

more start to fall….

I run to the next door neighbors and wake them, forcing them to
the ditch….

more branches come falling down..more cracks…more wind..

then it all stops - silence, then the downpour…

We just experienced a tree line tornado…..

We all were shaken, but ok.

Everyday we need to count our blessings….

Live like you never lived…love like you never loved…

give like you never gave.

Glad to be with you all….

God bless..

Press Releases for Increased Web Traffic To Live Life Free

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

United States of America (Press Release) May 20, 2008 — One of the great things about press releases is that they get your URL ’s all over the search engines IMMEDIATELY. By submitting press releases, you can get your name and URL seen quickly. Yes, Immediately. No waiting 3-6 weeks. Your releases could get indexed within 24 hours.

Top 10 search engine listings are very common.

Submit your releases Thursdays and Fridays, so they are released on Saturdays and Sundays in the media. Some sites have a two day delay.
When using a service to submit your press release, the competition for #1 or a top 10 listing on page one of most press release website is LESS on weekends too, as people are not paying top dollar to be there on Saturdays and Sundays, when media people are not working traditional 9-5 jobs.

The Elements you need to include in Your Press Release are:

Title
Subhead
Body
Keywords
Contact Info

TITLE

Your title should be keyword rich, with the specific niche you are marketing to. Try for the headline to contain some of your keywords if you want the press release optimized for. Do some keyword research, using www.goodkeywords.com to see what people in your niche are most looking for and also buying. Add those popular keywords into your title.

Use good copywriting headlines of the past, and modify them to fit your situation. Many great long copy style “direct response” sales letters have wonderful titles and headlines which you can modify and borrow.

SUBHEAD

Your subhead should also be keyword rich, repeating some of the main keywords found in the title, but telling a little more info in 2-3 sentences. This is where you summarize what your PR is going to talk about.

BODY

Your body must contain a great story of something news worthy, which makes readers want to read it. It can be short or long, but add relevant keywords and keyword phrases to it which will help optimization. You might want to have your keyword or key phrases mentioned 4-7 times in your release.

The length of your release should be 100-500 words. Some services take more words than that, but if you can do a power punched release with all the goods in it and make the media take notice, do make it short.

Include the basics in your body which one would find in everyday newspaper articles.

Who
What
When
Where
Why
How

Tell a story and speak to the news media, don’t sell to them. Don’t make your press release, “Press Release Spam or PRSpam.” Don’t make it an ad and try to sell the product or service in your release. The idea is to make them curious, and want to go to your sites, find out more, where you can collect a lead or make a sale there.

Don’t use words like “You can make money”. Use words like “One can make money…” Speaking in the right “person” makes it legit. Watch how you use, “I said, you said, or he/she said.”

Also ad your website URL in the body if you can, and if it is relevant.

KEYWORDS

Usually you can select 5-10 keywords, depending on which services you are using, which are the ones you used in your press release content, which helps get you listed for them with Search Engine Optimization, and that will bring you targeted niche traffic.

CONTACT INFO

Your Contact info should be a website, or phone # where you can capture a lead ’s contact information.

CAUTION:

Beware of getting in trouble with the companies you represent. Some do not allow press releases to be published with out permission. If you are lucky, you will get off with just a warning but you could be risking your whole business relationship.

So, be sure what you are writing about is okay and always get permission first if you are not the owner of the company or representing something or someone else.

If you would like to write about a newsworthy event of another company and use their publicity to get you publicity, ask permission first. Most programs allow you to submit press releases without permission, but check first.

Do a search for keywords similar to yours and read how others have written their releases to get more of an idea how to write yours. www.prweb.com has a search box, which you can type in your keywords and see the patterns, flows and styles of similar press releases.

Establishing yourself as an expert and have fun while doing it!

The life of an Internet Marketer….sigh

Monday, April 28th, 2008

I’ve been asked a question more than once. Each time, I think I give a similiar answer, but now I have to wonder.

The question I think many people want to know is, “What do you do daily as an Internet Marketer”?

Hmmm, the choices of a response are so many. Why? Because daily it is something different, but the same.

Ha, I laugh.

What do I do…well;

Place Ads,
Read Emails,
Respond Emails,
Study new techniques,
Post on Blogs,
Write an Article or Press Release,
Make a new vid,
Tweak the capture page,
Check stats,
Study another marketers techniques,
Set goals,
Set up email accounts for marketing,
Review the automation I’ve set up - is it working,
Eat / take 20 to relax,
read forums/ post,
chat with fellow marketings/network,
Check myspace / send comments,
Check youtube / send comments,
Check Friendster / Send comments,
Check autoresponders / update,

and the list would/could go on and on. The point is, daily, it is something new. The steps I take can depend on what actions are occurring and have occurred. If I learn something new in a training course - I then go an apply it. This may mean I do nothing else but learn and apply that new step/technique. That will then put me a day behind on the normal “duties” and I end
up running the next two days to keep up - but it is never the same boring thing done daily. Well, placing ads can be, but even that is minimal with the great Copy/Paste feature we all use.

So, what do I do daily - I work. I do something. That is what it takes to get things done and to be seen and heard on the net. If you place two ads and think you are going to get the millions coming to you - Well Think Again. The point of all this
is if you at least do something daily, then you are making progress and making changes, which will result in some change in your life.

Try to think of it this way. If you want to make true friends, do you go into a room, turn on the tv and shut the blinds, turn off the phone and veg out? NO - you have to get out of the house, go to stores, churches, bars and other social places (not particularily in that order, ha) and meet people. Marketing is the same concept. You have to be active - you have to attend forums, functions and trainings. You have to communicate (phone, email, instant messengers, articles). You have to be out there doing something - even if only one thing a day - you have to be doing IT.

That’s what I do, what do you do?

Yes, another Pre-Launch….

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

If you’ve been around me long enough, I am sure you heard me preach that Pre-Launch programs never work nor do they last. I could discuss this issue repeatedly until I either give in or pass out. In any case, I do have to admit my wrongs once in a while. I can personally advise that I have met “newbies” that have cashed it in on “pre-launch” programs and continue to earn income from those programs. Leaving it at that….I feel obligated to show you all this - who am I to hold you back…..

If you are doing anything regularly on the Internet, then the name Brian Wynns has come across your screen once or twice. He is another successful GURU (god I hate that term). However, why not cash in on his name while you can….

The Email Habits That Make People Hate You - Guest Post

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Email is a great tool if you used properly. Unfortunately, that’s a big “if”. I’ve written this list to compile what I feel are the worst misuses of email. Hopefully you aren’t an offender, but if you are, consider yourself warned. I won’t be coming after you, but some of your friends might.

Violation #1 - Not Responding to Emails that Need Replies

If I ask for a response, give me a response! If I don’t get a reply back to my email, even if you are just writing to say you can’t help me, I’ll think my message wasn’t read at all. With overzealous spam filters and email gremlins, it isn’t uncommon for mail to hit the trash before it is read.

I could never understand people who commit this crime, but some plausible reasons (but not excuses) for not replying to obvious requests include:

Don’t have the time.
Can’t help/don’t know the answer.
Don’t know the answer or have the information yet.

The first is a case of laziness. It takes 15 seconds to write a reply to an email, even if it just states that you got their message but can’t reply. Letting the person know you don’t have time to reply is better than ignoring them entirely.

With the second case and third cases you should still send an email, even if you can’t give a meaningful response. Just a short note to let them know that you read their message. If you can’t answer, tell them. It will save the wait and let that person ask someone else. If you can’t answer now, give an estimated time when you might be able to reply.

Violation #2 - Sending Emails Without a Point

I probably get a few dozen emails a day. Even at this relatively low level, I still scan my messages looking to categorize them for a response. If the person you’re emailing gets 100+ messages a day, they probably pay even less attention to individual mail items.

Because I can’t spend all day reading email, I hate receiving emails that aren’t clear on their purpose. For myself, I automatically group all my email into a several categories:

Introductions - reply needed
Requests - reply needed
Thanks/Signing Off - no reply needed
Mass Info Mailings - no reply needed
Mass Request Mailings - reply needed
Follow-up Questions - reply needed

So, if you send me an email that looks like it doesn’t have a question, I probably won’t respond. This can happen when you bury your actual question within a paragraph of unimportant information. Separate out your questions and make it clear in the subject line what type of email this is. You’ll save me time and yourself the headache of waiting for a response.

Violation #3 - Emails With Broken Grammar

My grammar isn’t perfect. I can understand an occasional sentence fragment or misplaced comma. But that doesn’t mean you can leave entire sentences without capital letters, or misspell every word. The rules of grammar were formalized because they make your writing easier to read.

Here are a few mistakes and how to avoid them:

Capitalize Sentences. The first word in a sentence should have a capital. Reading emails written entirely in lowercase is a headache.

Use Periods. Don’t just send the first word salad you can come up with. Separate ideas into different sentences.

If You Wouldn’t Say It, Don’t Write It. If it sounds wrong when you write it on paper, it’s probably a mistake in text. I hate trying to reply to people when I don’t understand what they’ve written.

Violation #4 - Writing All in One Paragraph

A good rule of thumb to use is that your paragraphs should be under six sentences. Your emails are readable when most of the paragraphs are 3-5 lines. Writing everything in one block limits my ability to scan for key points. Paragraphs also help by spacing apart ideas, when you write in one block those divisions are easier to miss.

Another, but less common, sin is writing everything as one sentence paragraphs. This is fine for a short email with just a few thoughts. But it can get annoying when you’re trying to read a few pages of disjointed writing.

Use small paragraphs for emphasis (1-2 sentences), long paragraphs for details (4-6 sentences).

Violation #5 - Attempts at Humor

The person at the other side of an email doesn’t know you’re trying to be funny. Sarcasm, wit and jests are all based on timing and your tone of voice. When you place them into text, the humor is replaced with confusion. I’ve had to re-read a lot of emails because they try to overuse humor and wind up missing the point.

Using emoticons doesn’t help either. Adding a winking or smiling face to the end of an email isn’t a substitute for all the complexity of human facial expressions. Humor can work in an email, but it takes a particular style of writing to work. Most people don’t write that way, so I recommend trying to avoid the jokes and get to the point.

Violation #6 - Sacrificing Communication for Productivity

Email can be a chore. If you get a lot of mail each day, you need to develop some systems to streamline those messages. Unfortunately, if you take some of these tips too far, the time you save isn’t worth the price. Remember that the point of email is to communicate, not just to empty your inbox.

There are many ways you can violate this rule, but one is by having a bad autoresponder. There are legitimate uses for autoresponders. But often they are just irritating. An autoresponder doesn’t tell me another human has actually read my message. The response clutters up my inbox without telling me whether I’ll ever hear back from that person.

The worst violators of email tend to be the people who use it infrequently. I know people who receive hundreds of emails a day and never violate one of these rules. I also know people who receive several emails a week and still manage to break a few. So having a full inbox isn’t an excuse for writing emails that make people hate you.
